West Michigan Symphony: "Guitar Romance" with Pablo Sainz Villegas

Our next broadcast concert by the West Michigan Symphony is Sunday at 1 pm, hosted by Foley Schuler as part of Sunday on Blue Lake, which will also include a musical celebration of the 100th anniversary of Hemingway's classic, The Sun Also Rises.

As our season of broadcast concerts of the West Michigan Symphony continues, renowned Spanish guitarist Pablo Sainz Villegas joins the WMS for "Guitar Romance," a Spanish-themed concert originally performed on April 17, 2026—in a special presentation of Sunday on Blue Lake.

The program's final hour will take the form of a special music celebration of the great American writer Ernest Hemingway, whose iconic novel of the "Lost Generation," The Sun Also Rises, was published 100 years ago this week. We'll hear that work—and several other Hemingway classics—evoked in Michael Daugherty's Grammy Award-winning concerto for cello and orchestra, Tales of Hemingway.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake With Foley Schuler every Sunday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
