Left: Pianist Michelle Cann, who joins the WMS for Gershwin's Concerto in F this week. Upper right: Marin Alsop with mentor Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood; Lower right: Marin Alsop conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Our next broadcast concert by the West Michigan Symphony is Sunday at 1 pm, hosted by Foley Schuler as part of Sunday on Blue Lake, which will also include a 70th birthday celebration of Marin Alsop.

As our season of broadcast concerts of the West Michigan Symphony continues, we present "Gershwin's Piano Concerto," a special Black History Month concert originally performed on February 27, 2026, with acclaimed pianist Michelle Cann featured in the title work, and guest conductor Kellen Gray leading the program, which also includew Michael Ellis Ingram's Overture to Jubilee and the Negro Folk Symphony by William Levi Dawson—in a special presentation of Sunday on Blue Lake.

The program's final hour will take the form of a 70 birthday tribute to the great Marin Alsop, as the trailblazing conductor conducts works of Barber, Bernstein and Adams.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake With Foley Schuler every Sunday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
