The Soundtrack this Week

Marpessa Dawn in "Black Orpheus"
Marpessa Dawn in "Black Orpheus"

As fall approaches, The Soundtrack turns to one of Haley Taylor’s favorite jazz albums, and the movie that inspired it. We’ll travel from the music of Black Orpheus, where Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá brought bossa nova to audiences around the world, to San Francisco, where a young Vince Guaraldi transformed those melodies into Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus. Along the way, discover how an ancient Greek myth became a Brazilian film, how its music found a second life in American jazz, and how an unexpected B-side called “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” helped set Guaraldi on the path to Charlie Brown. It’s a story about music being passed from one artist to another, and how a melody can keep changing long after the movie ends.
