One of the seminal voices in opera of the last Century, Swedish tenor Jussi Björling appeared for many years at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and such major European opera houses as the Royal Opera House in London and La Scala in Milan. With a sound both sweet and soaring he was equally at home in Italian, French and Russian operatic repertoire, Björling was ranked "Greatest Singer of the 20th Century" by a poll of music critics in Classic CD Magazine in July of 1999. He would take his final bow on this earth on September 9, 1960—just 49 years old at the time—and, on Wednesday afternoon's Classical Music With Foley Schuler, we'll enjoy several unforgettable performances by the legendery tenor on the anniversary of his death, including duets with Robert Merrill and Zinka Milanov, and solo turns in selections from Puccini's La Boheme, Flotow's Martha, and more.
