Sunday on Blue Lake: William Wallace by...William Wallace

13th Century Freedom Fighter William Wallace (left) and his namesake, composer William Wallace (right)

Tune in this week as Foley presents a musical tribute to the legendary Scottish warrior, William Wallace on the anniversary of his death in 1305—and more.

This Sunday will mark 721st anniversary of the trial and brutal execution of legendary hero of the Scottish rebellion, William Wallace. Hung, drawn and quartered on August 23, 1305. he would pass with his gruesome end from warrior to martyr of mythic proportions. On this week's Sunday on Blue Lake, we’ll remember this icon of Scotland with a stirring symphonic, portrait by his namesake, the early 20th Century Scottish composer William Wallace. We’ll pair that with another work of William Wallace—the composer—his Symphony, “The Creation.” To complement that we’ll explore other musical creation stories, including And God Created Great Whales by Alan Hovhaness and Darius Milhaud’s landmark jazz ballet based on an African creation myth, The Creation of the World.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler every Sunday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
