Dr. Salvador Brotons will lead the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra in orchestral favorites by Gioacchino Rossini, Giacomo Puccini, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Dr. Brotons stopped by our studios to talk with Steve Albert about the program.
Since 2001, Dr. Salvador Brotons has served as a professor of composition and orchestra conducting at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). Additionally, he held the position of composer in residence at the Palau de la Música Catalana during the 2016‐2017 season. In recognition of his contributions to the artistic community of SW Washington (USA), he was honored with the Clark County Arts Commission Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
Dr. Brotons was born into a family of musicians in Barcelona. Initially, he studied flute under his father’s guidance and later pursued advanced studies at the Barcelona Music Conservatory, specializing in flute, composition, and conducting. In 1985, he received a Fulbright scholarship and relocated to the US, earning a doctorate in music from Florida State University. During his career, he served as the principal flute of the Orquestra del Gran Teatro del Liceu de Barcelona from 1977 to 1985 and was a member of the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona from 1981 to 1985. As a composer, he has crafted over 170 pieces, predominantly orchestral and chamber works, receiving prestigious composition awards. His compositions have been published and recorded on various labels including Naxos, EMI, Auvidis, and Albany Records, among others. Currently, he juggles a demanding schedule as a conductor alongside fulfilling numerous commissions across different genres.
