The music of celebrated American composer—sometimes known as the "American Brahms"—Samuel Barber, and that of the brilliant and boundary-stretching Icelandic pop singer, songwriter and performance artist, Björk, might seem, on the surface, worlds away, but both find a place in the heart—and on a single album—of renowned soprano Renée Fleming. From her enchanting recording, Distant Light, we'll hear this super star from the world of opera perform Barber's sublimely beautiful vocal masterpiece, Knoxville: Summer of 1915, as well as Hans Ek's setting for voice and orchestra of three songs by Björk: "Virus," "Jóga," and "All is Full of Love"—on Tuesday afternoon's Classical Music With Foley Schuler.
Also, as a complement to the music of Björk on Tuesday's program, we'll hear music by a composer with whom she (along with so many others) feels a deep affinity—the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt...and, in the meantime, to coplement all that, we invite you to enjoy this clip of famous interview that Björk conducted with Arvo Pärt in 1997 for the BBC music documentary Modern Minimalists.
