Born in Switzerland on July 24, 1880, composer Ernest Bloch would move to the United States in 1916 become a naturalized American citizen in 1924—remaining active as a leading figure in musical American life for several decades to come, teaching at the Mannes School of Music in New York, the Cleveland Institute of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Many of his best known works found him drawing deeply on his Jewish heritage for inspiration. In honor of the composer's birthday we'll hear one of these—his Schelomo, a Herbraic Rhapsody for cello and orchestra (featuring the great Yo-Yo Ma as soloist) —as well as a work in celebration for orhcestra and chorus of his adopted home: America: An Epic Rhapsody.
