For six decades Paul Schrader has drawn deeply on hins Calvinist roots growing up in Grand Rapids to creat one of the most compelling, probing and provocative bodies of work in modern cinema—first achieving reknown as one of the greatest screenwriters in the business (including a number of key collaborations with Martin Scorsese) and then going on to do remarkable work as a director himself.
We'll celebrate Paul Schrader's 80th birthday on this afternoon's Classical Music With Foley Schuler with music from some of his finest cinematic achievements, including Taxi Driver and Raging Bull (each based on Schrader screenplays), to several of his masterworks as a director, including Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Affliction, and First Reformed—with music including that of Bernard Herrmann, Philip Glass, Edvard Grieg, Pietro Mascagni and more.
