Happy Birthdays, Leon Fleisher and Susan Graham!

Thursday afternoon we'll enjoy music by two masters of their craft, as we hear preformances by one of the great pianists, and one of the great singers, of our time, both born on July 23.

Along with birthday tributes to the late, great pianist, Leon Fleisher, and "America's mezzo," Susan Graham, Thursday afternoon's Classical Music with Foley Schuler will also include one of the great Symphoies of Anton Bruckner, his Symphony No. 5. Composed between 1875 and 1876 during a period of deep personal distress and financial struggle, the work, kown for its extraordinary musical architecture, stands as one of the peak structural achievements in the symphonic repertoire. Ironically though, due to severe illness, Bruckner never had the opportunity to hear his own masterpiece performed by a live orchestra before his death in 1896. Foley Schuler
Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
