Happy Birthday, Belated, Bucky--and Remembering Sam Neill

Left: Buckminster Fuller with geodesic dome, Black Mountain College, 1949. Right: Sam Neil in The Piano, 1993.

Tune in Monday after as Foley marks both the recent birthday (on Sunday) of visionary designer and thinker R. Buckminster Fuller and pays tribute to actor Sam Neill upon his passing in the early hours this morning with some special related music.

During the summer of 1948, Buckminster Fuller participated in a legendary theatrical performance at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. He starred alongside an avant-garde ensemble in Erik Satie’s Dadaist play Le piège de Méduse (The Ruse of Medusa), where Fuller played the lead role, Merce Cunningham performed as a mechanical monkey, and John Cage produced the production. The performance of Le piège de Méduse was a major artistic highlight during Fuller's iconic 1948 summer residency at the college. Alongside his acting, Fuller delivered an impromptu three-hour lecture on the evening of his arrival and led students in attempting to build his first, albeit initially unsuccessful, large-scale geodesic dome.

We'll hear a set of seven short dances from Satie's Le piège de Méduse in honor of Fuller's recent birthday—and much more—on Monday afternoon's Classical Music with Foley Schuler.

We'll also remember beloved Kiwi actor Sam Neill, who has died at the age of 78, who would come to international prominence with performances in Jurrasic Park the The Piano. We'll pay tribute to the late actor with music from each Monday afternoon.

You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—ever weekday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
