Sunday on Blue Lake: The Great Lakes...and Beyond

Folias Duo: Carmen Maret and Andrew Begeron
Folias Duo: Carmen Maret and Andrew Begeron

Highlights of this week's show include a preview of the new album from the acclaimed Grand Rapids-based Folias Duo, Great Lakes—as well as a birthday tribute to legendary Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, and more.

The Michigan-based Folias Duo—flutist-composer Carmen Maret and guitarist-composer Andrew Bergeron—are set to release their ninth studio album, Great Lakes next month. The album features eight original compositions exploring the history, geography, and movement of the Great Lakes region, and also marks the duo's first vinyl record. We'll give an early listen on this week's Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler, as we sample selections from the new recording ahead of its August 14 release.

The Great Lakes inspired music will be complemented by the Water Music by Handel and the Four "Sea Interludes" from the opera Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten, and our final hour will be given over to a presentation of the transcendent Requiem, Op. 48 by Gabriel Fauré in honor of the anniversary of its premiere, as well as a birthday tribute to Oscar Hammerstein II, including performances by the United States Marine Band and soprano Renée Fleming.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler every Sunday at its all-new time—from 1 until 4 pm—on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
