Sunday on Blue Lake: Happy Birthday George Szell!

György Széll (later to become George Szell, Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra) in 1909 at the age of 12.

Tune in to this week's show we salute a legend of music, born on June 7, 1897.

On this morning's Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler, we will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the great George Szell—legendary for his many years at the helm of the Cleveland Orchestra, elevating the ensemble over his tenure to the status of one of the finest orchestras in the world—with several of the many classic recordings made over his illustrrious career. We'll also celebrate Szell the composer, with some of the remarkably accomplished music written during his teenage years, when he was touring Europe as a sensational Wunderkind (see picture above), and being touted as "the next Mozart."

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler every Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
