"Orchestral Fireworks": The Grand Rapids Symphony Broadcast Season Finale!

Tune in Sunday, May 31, at 1 pm for the final in our season of broadcast concerts from the Grand Rapids Symphony's 2025-2026 season—hosted by Blue Lake's own Foley Schuler.

Our series goes out with a bang, as we take you back to the Grand Rapids Symphony's season finale concert from May 8 and 9. "Orchestral Fireworks." The program will open as Music Director Marcelo Lehninger takes us to his native Brazil for the Overture to Il Guarany by Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes—and then it's "all roads lead to Rome" including works of Rota and Respighi, as first the Symphony's principal double bass, Jonathan Reed, is featured in the Divertimento Concertante by Nino Rota; The concerto, and season, will then conclude with two of the three masterful tone poems that make up the "Roman Trilogy" by Ottorino Respighi, his Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome, the latter widely considered one of the greatest orchestral showpieces in the repertoire—and the very work that Marcel Lehninger first conducted with the orchestra in the perfmance that lead to his being name the 14th Music Director of the Grand Rapids Symphon ten years ago, on June 2, 2016.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
