May 28: Celebrating Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and György Ligeti

Tune in Thursday afternoon as Foley Schuler celebrates the May 28 birthdays two legendary figures of music, baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Hungarian composer, György Ligeti, with music of each—including some of the latter's work used to unforgettable effect in Stanley Kubirck's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Eyes Wide Shut.

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was truly one of the most indelible voices of our time—and of all time. As a master of the operatic stage and, especially, of the German art-song tradition, the baritone brought a special depth, humanity and expressiveness to every note, and every word, he touched. On this afternoon's Classical Music with Foley Schuler will feature, we'll hear several ompelling performances given by "Fidi" (as he was affectionately known), in honor of what have been his 101st birthday.

Described bythe eminent music historian and critic Paul Griffiths as "one of the most important avant-garde composers in the latter half of the twentieth century" György Ligeti would also become one of the most popular as well when Stanley Kubrick would use his music to unforgettable effect in several if his iconic films, beginning with 2001: A Space Odyssey, and then in The Shining—and Ligeti's music would figure yet again as as a key element in his final film, Eyes Wide Shut. We'll hear some of that music as well, in honor of what would have been the composer's 103rd birthday, Thursday afternoon—and more.

You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
