Sunday on Blue Lake: Happy Mother's Day!

Foley offers a musical celebration of motherhood on this week's show.

With a different versions (both instrumental and vocal) of Dvořák's beloved "Songs My Mother Taught Me" to start each of our three hours, this special Mother's Day edition of Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler will include a visit to Grandmother's Garden by way of piano music of Amy Beach, lullabies by Brahms and Richard Strauss, as well as musical selections that find their respective composers expressing their profound grief at the death of their mothers. These include works of Anton Webern, Ferrucio Busoni and Johannes Brahms—including several sections from the latter's A German Requiem, Brahms' transcendent choral masterwork, thought to have been written in response to the death of his own mother, and a work of profound comfort to all who mourn the loss of a loved one.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler every Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
