Sunday on Blue Lake: An Organ Celebration!

Virgil Fox (left) and Marcel Dupré (right)

Tune this week as host Foley Schuler celebrates the May 3rd birthdays of two legends of the organ.

On this week's program, following music both by and in memory of Antonin Dvořák, (the anniversary of whose death was May 1), we will, in the final, 11 o'clock, hour, showcase two giants of the organ—both of whom were born on May 3rd—Virgil Fox (b. May 3, 1912) and Marcel Dupré (b. May 3, 1886). Our tribute will include Virgil Fox performing some of his own musical favorites on the famed Aeolian Skinner organ at The Riverside Church in New York City where he was organist for many years, and, including honor of the 140th anniversary of the birth of French organist and composer Marcel Dupré, we'll hear his Symphony for Organ and Orchestra in G minor, with Michael Murray on the organ.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler every Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
