Remembering Ann Schein (1939 – 2026)

Tune in Friday afternoon as Foley features recordigns by beloved pianist and teacher, Ann Schein, who passed away this week at the age of 86.

We were saddned to learn this week of the passing of the brillian pianist and teacher Ann Schein. Here is a statement from the Peabody Conversatory, on whose piano faculy she served for many years:

"We are heartbroken to share the passing of Ann Schein, a beloved member of our piano faculty and a cherished presence in the Peabody community for decades.

An internationally renowned soloist and one of the great Chopin pianists of her generation, Ann brought the same devotion to her students that she brought to every stage she graced. Her teaching was full of warmth, rigor, and genuine care for the artists in her studio.

Ann was also a Peabody alumna, a 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, and the unforgettable performer at a special concert we were honored to celebrate with her here in Baltimore in 2019. Her husband and fellow faculty member, Earl Carlyss, passed away earlier this year.

We hold their daughters, loved ones, and especially Ann's current students close in this moment. Her bright smile and brilliant artistry will be deeply missed."

We'll pay tribute to her artistry and memory in several different contexts on Friday afternoon's Classical Music with Foley Schuler, including a performance of one of her signature works throughout her career—the Davidsbündlertänze of Robert Schumann—and in the meantime, enjoy some footage of Schein performaing Chopin at the Aspen Music Festival in 2012:

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
