Tune in Thursday from 1 to 4 pm as Foley presents a magical afternoon filled with music inspired by fairy tales, beloved children's books and more.

Selected to honor the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, April 2 has been designated "International Children's Book Day—a day for promoting a love of reading among children. Classical music abounds with magical musical retellings of classic fairy tales and favorite children's books, and, on Thursday afternoon's Classical Music With Foley Schuler, we'll enjoy a wide selection in honor of the occasion. Andersen will be represented by a symphonic poem of Alexander Zemlinsky (based on The Little Mermaid), and fairy tales of Brothers Grimm by ballet music of Prokofiev. We'll have musical fairy tales of Mother Goose rendered by Mauric Ravel, as well as an exerpt or two from two from two contemporary one-act operas based on beloved children's books—Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are and Roald Dahl's The Fantastic Mr. Fox—by Oiver Knussen and Tobias Picker, respectively.

You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
