Happy Birthday, Samuel Barber!

Tune in Monday afternoon as Foley offers a musical celebration of one of the most beloved and performed composers of the mid-20th Century—born on March 9, 1910.

From the youthful sparkle of the Overture to the School for Scandal (written while still a student at the Curtis Insitute) to a mature mastery of his Violin Concerto...from the deep nostalgia of Knoxville: Summer of 1915 to the amused tenderness of his Souvenirs Suite—Barber brought the ideals of Romanticism into the modern era with an unerring grace, craftsmanship and profound lyricism. We'll enjoy some of the most memorable musical moments to come from his prolific pen in honor of the composer's birthday. One of the finest singers among modern composers, with a fine baritone voice, Barber will also be heard as soloist in an historic recording of his setting for baritone and string quartet of Matthew Arnold's Dover Beach.

Also featured will be Beethoven's Symphony No. 7—and more special programming in honor of Women's History Month, as we showcase one of the leading composer's of today, Jenifer Higdon.

You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
