Sunday on Blue Lake: A "Boult" out of the Blue

Tune in to this week's program as host Foley Schuler pays tribute to legendary conductor Sir Adrian Boult on the anniversary of his passing.

On this week's edition of Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler, we'll remember the eminent conductor Sir Adrian Boult, who passed away on February 22, 1983. We'll do so with a special a program composed almost entirely of music conducted by Boult, one of the great champions, and interpreters, of English music of the 20th Century.

In the first hour, we'll hear a fascinating ballet work by longtime Boult collaborator, Ralph Vaughan Williams, entitled Job: A Masque for Dancing, which the composer dedicated to the maestro.

We'll start the second hour with Boult conducting some non-English music in the form of two masterful sets of variations—Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Ernst von Dohnanyi's Variations on a Nursery Theme (with the composer at the piano), before heading back to England for Vaughan William's sublime work for orchestra and 16 vocal soloists, the Serenade to Music.

Our final hour will focus on a single major work—one of the greatest symphonies ever to spring from English soil: The Symphony No. 1 by Sir Edward Elgar.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler every Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
