Celebrations of revelry, excess and merriment immediately preceding the strictures of the Lenten season abound through the world, under various names. Highlights on our program today will include music evocative of Carnival time by Schumann and Dvořák, as well as a favorite work by French composer Darius Milhaud inspired by Brazil's festive Carnival celebrations. We'll hear ballet music by Stravnisky set during Russian Shrovetide—and music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk will take us to New Orleans, where Mardi Gras festivities are of course well under way today.
Today's show will also feature music inspired or otherwise related to horses in honor of the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Firehorse—and we'll celebrate the birthday of Arcangelo Corelli with some of the Baroque master's music.
You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio...
