David Rendall and Frederica von Stade in Mozart's "Idomeneo."

The Metropolitan Opera presents a classic performance of "Idomeneo."

The Metropolitan Opera continues its Artist's Choice broadcasts this week with a performance chosen by Joyce DiDonato. Jeffrey Tate led the production of Mozart's "Idomeneo" on February 15, 1986. The cast featured David Rendall in the title role with Benita Valente (Ilia), Frederica von Stade (Idamante), Hildegard Behrens (Elettra), and John Alexander (Arbace).

W.A. Mozart wrote "Idomeneus, King of Crete, or, Ilia and Idamante" in 1781. It was written in Italian for performance in Munich and is generally considered Mozart's first mature opera. Set in Crete in the times of the Trojan War, the plot follows the relationship of the captive Trojan princess, Ilia, and the prince regent of Crete, Idamante. Idomeneo returns from Troy, through the intervention of the god Neptune, causing a great deal of drama. To reach their happy ending the couple must fend off jealousy, death, and a sea monster.

Joyce DeDonata chose this performance to highlight the excellence of Frederica von Stade in this "trouser role." Join us for a wonderful afternoon at the opera - Saturday at 1 o'clock.
