Jules Massenet's opera is based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s phenomenally popular novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (first published in 1774). While opera usually shows us the travails of a female protagonist, Werther delves into the impossible situation of a young male Romantic poet and the love he can not attain.
Richard Bonynge is on the podium for this performance with Alfredo Kraus (Werther), Régine Crespin (Charlotte), Kathleen Battle (Sophie), and Lenus Carlson (Albert).
Tenor Lawrence Brownlee chose this week's broadcast presentation, featuring Spanish tenor Alfredo Kraus (1927-1999). One of the great lyric tenors of the last century, Kraus made his Met debut in 1966. Join us for this classic performance, Saturday, February 7, at 1 p.m. here on Blue Lake Public Radio.
