Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Celebration in Music

On this Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, afternoon host Foley Schuler showcases music inspired by the iconic civil rights leader.

Highlights of Monday afternoon's program include The Montgomery Variations, Margaret Bonds' 1964 orchestral work dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and inspired by the composer's visit to Montgomery, Alabama, during the Civil Rights Movement.

Joseph Schwantner's stirring New Morning for the World: Daybreak of Freedom for narrator and orchestra will give voice to the immortal words of Martin Luther King, Jr., himself—and we'll also hear new music by the Chicago-based composer Stacy Garrop, written for and performed by the acclaimed Kronos Quartet and incorporating the recorded voice of the legendary Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson, who was a close friend of Dr. King, and on that platform with him at the historic March on Washington
and can be heard, urging, "Tell them about the dream, Martin—tell them about the dream..."

Finally, as January 19 is also the birthday of the legendary Edgar Allan Poe, we'll also enjoy several musical selections inspired that master of the macabre and one America's first great literary figures.

You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
