Sunday on Blue Lake: Manny and Fritz

On this week's show Foley celebrates the birthdays of French composer Emmanuel Chabrier—and that of Blue Lake's founder, Fritz Stansell.

His music, with its innovative harmonies and sparkling charm and wit was an influence on such diverse composers as Debussy, Ravel, Richard Strauss, Satie, and Stravinsky. Gustav Mahler called his most famous work—an orchestral rhapsody inspired by his love of Spain—"the beginning of modern music." Vincent D'Indy dubbed him "the angel of drollery." He was all that, and so much more. We know him as Emmanuel Chabrier, and this week we'll celebrate the birthday of the composer with a wide array of his music—both signature works and lesser known gems—and a selection or two by other composers bearing their admiration for Chabrier.

In our final hour, from 11 am until noon, we will remember the beloved and visionary founder of both Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and also of Blue Lake Public Radio, Fritz Stansell, on the anniversary of his birth, with several of Fritz's musical favorites, including works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Dimitri Shostakovich.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler every Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
