On this week's program, host Foley Schuler celebrates the birthday of composer Reinhold Gliere—and presents a classical music tribute David Bowie, upon the 10th anniversary of the legendary artist's death.

In honor of the birthday of Reinhold Gliere we'll hear his epic Symphony No 3, "Ilya Muromets," named for and depicting the supernatural exploits of one of the great heroes of Slavic mythology and folklore—celebrated a protector of the people of Kiev, where Gliere was born on Jauanary 11, 1851.

And, as we remember one of the most brilliant and influential creative figures of the 20th and early 21st Centuries, David Bowie, upon the 10th anniversary of his passing—and keeping on the theme of "heroes"—we'll pair that with the Symphony No. 4, "Heroes," by Philip Glass, based on David Bowie's classic 1977 album of the same name. Also on the program, music from two of the many films in which Bowie memorably appeared—Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and The Hunger—and, rounding out the program will be the Sunrise Mass by one of today's leading composers of choral music, Ola Gjeilo.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler, ever Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
