Sunday on Blue Lake: David Amram at 95

Hailed by The Boston Globe as “the Renaissance Man of American Music,” composer, conductor and multi-instrumentalist David Amram turned 95 on November 17, and on this week's program we celebrate with new music of his released on the Naxos label earlier this week in honor of the occasion, as well as several other classic works by this most fascinating of musical figures, adding spice and soul to the American musical scene for most of 8 decades.

With the world-premiere recording of David Amram's Voyages for Solo Violin (inspired by favorite cities explored on the composer's travels) as our centerpiece (as well as music of his dedicated to his friend, and author of On the Road, Jack Kerouac), we'll also enjoy some musical travelogues by both Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz, including the latter's Harold in Italy, which premiered on November 23, 1834.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler ever Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
