Trombonist Robin Eubanks celebrates his 70th birthday this Saturday

Yesterday, October 22st, #BlueLakePublicRadio celebrated the unique music of trombonist Robin Eubanks during #JazzFromBlueLake. Gifted with a sharp, mathematical mind that layers staccato notes into complex polyrhythms creating a personal compositional signature, Robin Eubanks plays trombone with range, expressiveness and accuracy that helps identify his musical personality.

Join us today on our jazz stream to hear this broadcast. When you load the page, you will see a blue bar that shows what is streaming live. To the right on the bar is a tile that says “All Streams” or a star like icon. Click that which allows you to navigate to #JazzFromBlueLake.

When he appeared on #BlueLakePublicRadio in 2001 the night before performing live at #BlueLakeFineArtsCamp, Eubanks said his practice of Buddhism helped him to distinguish his musical self from the powerful influences of mentors J.J. Johnson and Slide Hampton.

On today’s jazz stream we’ll hear Robin Eubanks live at Blue Lake, in sets dedicated to drummer Art Blakey and pianist McCoy Tyner, with the SF Jazz Collective, with his good friend and fellow trombonist Steve Turre, with his brothers guitarist Kevin and trumpeter Duane, and, of course, with the great bassist Dave Holland who Eubanks performed with for over 15 years.

Hear Eubanks music in the first twenty minutes of each hour. Additionally listen for new releases revolving around the compositions of John Coltrane, vocalist Ledisi’s tribute to Dinah Washington, adventuresome music from the Amsterdam-based sextet Spinifex and wide a variety of styles and instrumentations.

We feature jazz every night at 10, Saturday mornings from 7 until noon, and Sunday evening starting at 6.

Blue Lake Public Radio’s “Jazz Director” Lazaro Vega started at Blue Lake in March of 1983, 8 months after Bob Hope spoke the first station I.D. ever heard on the air from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. In 2018, Lazaro was nominated for the The Bobby Jackson Award by JazzWeek.com as Programmer of the Year. This honor is voted on by people who promote jazz record airplay and keep Blue Lake in new releases. For more about Lazaro, see his recent interview with Local Spins.
