Jazz giant Dizzy Gillespie

Jazz great Dizzy Gillespie

Yesterday, October 21st, #BlueLakePublicRadio celebrated the 108th anniversary of trumpeter/bandleader/composer/vocalist Dizzy Gillespie’s birth. That program is heard again today on our jazz stream from www.bluelakeradio.org. When you load the page, you will see a blue bar that shows what is streaming live. To the right on the bar is a tile that says “All Streams” or a star like icon. Click that which allows you to navigate to #JazzFromBlueLake.

We heard the great trumpeter in small bands with vibraphonist Milt Jackson and tenor saxophonist Don Byas, who shares a birthday with Gillespie, in the first hour of the broadcast. Then in the first 20 minutes of the second hour Gillespie’s great big bands; and Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker in the third hour. The spotlight shines on 1960’s vintage music with Argentinian pianist/composer Lalo Schifrin in the fourth hour; and Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra in the fifth.

Intermingled with that great music are new releases across a variety of styles and instrumentations, from vocalist Kandace Springs to living legend George Coleman to the first meeting on record between drummers Billy Hart and Andrew Cyrille.
That’s a Tuesday here at #BlueLakePublicRadio the station that features jazz every night at 10, Saturday mornings from 7 until noon, and Sunday evening starting at 6.

Blue Lake Public Radio’s “Jazz Director” Lazaro Vega started at Blue Lake in March of 1983, 8 months after Bob Hope spoke the first station I.D. ever heard on the air from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. In 2018, Lazaro was nominated for the The Bobby Jackson Award by JazzWeek.com as Programmer of the Year. This honor is voted on by people who promote jazz record airplay and keep Blue Lake in new releases. For more about Lazaro, see his recent interview with Local Spins.
