Remembering Jacqueline du Pré

Tune in this afternoon as Foley presents an appreciation of the legendary cellist, who passed away on October 19, 1987.

On this afternoon's Classical Music with Foley Schuler, we'll remember the great Jacqueline du Pré, whose meteoric rise marked the arrival of one of the most stunningly gifted musicians of her generation. Though her brilliant career was cut short in her late twenties by onset of multiple sclerosis, forcing her to withdraw from public performance, Du Pré remained active as a teacher and mentor until her death on October 19, 1987 at the age of 42.

38 yeas after her death—and over 50 since she stopped performing—she remains a highly influential figure in the world of classical music, celebrated for her fiery passion, emotive playing and intensity. This fire lives on in numerous recordings, several of which will be featured this afternoon, including chamber music made with her then husband, Daniel Barenboim on the piano, and her classic recordings of the Elgar Cello Concerto, which would become her musical signature.

You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 4 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
