Born September 4, 1892, Darius Milhaud came to prominence as a member of the influential group of French composers known as Les Six and would leave a legacy as one of the most prolific composers of the 20th Century, creating a wide-ranging body of work, a good deal of it influenced by jazz and Brazilian music. Milhaud was highly regarded as a teacher as well, with students including such future jazz and classical composers, as Burt Bacharach, Dave Brubeck, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, György Kurtág, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, and William Bolcom, among others. Thursday on Classical Music With Foley Schuler, we'll enjoy music by Milhaud as well as that of some of his students throughout the afternoon, and more. Also, in the 2 o'clock hour, Foley will welcome onto the show Tom Schaub, Artistic Director of the Michigan Irish Music Festival, for a preview of the beloved annual festival, which runs September 11-14.
You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 4 on Blue Lake Public Radio.
