Tune in for a musical celebration of fatherhood on this week's Sunday on Blue Lake with Foley Schuler

This Sunday morning, in honor of Father's Day, Foley Schuler will feature musical selections reflective of father's and their children. Included will be a concerto Richard Strauss wrote for his father (the eminent horn player Franz Strauss), as well as music Clarice Assad wrote for her father, Sergio and uncle, Odair (the Assad Brothers Guitar Duo). Leonard Bernstein celebrates the birth of his son Alex in a tender song performed by Deborah Voigt; We'll enjoy musical tributes to fathers by American masters Charles Ives and Samuel Barber, as works by two great 20th Century composers written for the respective sons, including Igor Stravinsky (writing for son, Soulima) and Dmitri Shostakovich (writing for his son Maxim), each performed by the family members themselves in historic recordings.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 5 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
