Sunday on Blue Lake: Music for the Royal Fireworks

George Frideric Handel
Balthasar Denner (Attrib.)
George Frideric Handel

This week Foley Schuler celebrates the anniversary of premiere of one of George Frideric Handel's most beloved works.

George Frideric Handel composed his Music for the Royal Fireworks in 1749 at the behest of King George II, for the fireworks display in London's Green Park on 27 April 1749. The music—and event—celebrated the end of the War of the Austrian Succession and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748. In honor of the anniversary of this premiere Foley Schuler will feature a performance in which Sir Charles Mackerras recreates the arrangement in which the music was first heard that day (at King George's request containing "no fiddles," but only war-like instruments of winds and percussion. That will be paired with the The Civil War—a Symphonic Trilogy, by the German emigre composer, Margaret Buechner—in honor of the 160th anniversary, a little earlier in the month, of the end of the American Civil War.

You can hear Sunday on Blue Lake with your host Foley Schuler every Sunday morning from 9 until noon on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Encouraged by creative parents, Foley began his music career at age 7, studying violin with Jean Manning at North Muskegon Public Schools. As a Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp camper, he became Blue Lake Public Radio’s first high school intern. Foley earned an English Literature degree from Hope College, and Masters in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College. He has performed with the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony; served on the English Department faculty at Muskegon Community College, and been the Music, Art & Theatre reviewer for the Muskegon Chronicle. He follows his love of the arts around the globe, but says, “There is no place like the Blue Lake setting, sharing extraordinary music with our listeners.” Foley hosts Blue Lake Public Radio’s weekday classical music from 1 to 5 p.m. and “Sunday on Blue Lake”.
