Paul Sacher (April 28, 1906 – May 26, 1999) was a Swiss conductor, businessman and patron of the arts—and would seamlessly combine all of these capacities by commissioning works from many of the greatest composers the 20th Century for the Basel Chamber Orchestra, which he founded and conducted for over 60 years (1926-1987). These included masterpieces by Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Paul Hindemith, Bohuslav Martinů, Frank Martin and Hans Werner Henze, and many others. Please tune in Monday afternoon as we enjoy several of these in honor of Sacher's birthday.
You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 5 on Blue Lake Public Radio.
