Saxophonist Michael Doyle and Evidence recording "Blue Lake In Session" on 4/22/2025.

Please join Jazz From Blue Lake Saturday morning for an hour long session with Evidence recorded in the Blue Lake Studios on April 22, 2025.

Evidence last visited our studios in 2008. This week the Grand Rapids based hard bop and Latin Jazz quintet returned with seven original compositions and hearts full of rhythm as you'll hear Saturday morning at 9 as part of Jazz From Blue Lake, which airs every Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m.

Featuring saxophonist Michael Doyle and trumpeter Matt Sumner in the front-line, this Evidence rhythm section of pianist Steve Talaga, bassist Tom Lockwood and drummer Fred Knapp has played together over 15 years. Doyle has led Evidence since 1984, releasing three albums which were reviewed in Jazztimes and Downbeat Magazines. Everyone in the band writes. Highlights of the broadcast include Sumner's tribute to Talaga, "Song For Steve," Jim Cooper's "Javelina Nights," and Rob Mullins "I Got Rhythm" variation, "Bb Major Etude."

This broadcast was produced by Lazaro Vega and engineered by Steve Albert. Special thanks to Josiah Jackson.

Blue Lake Public Radio’s “Jazz Director” Lazaro Vega started at Blue Lake in March of 1983, 8 months after Bob Hope spoke the first station I.D. ever heard on the air from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. In 2018, Lazaro was nominated for the The Bobby Jackson Award by JazzWeek.com as Programmer of the Year. This honor is voted on by people who promote jazz record airplay and keep Blue Lake in new releases. For more about Lazaro, see his recent interview with Local Spins.
