Friday Afternoons is a collection of twelve song settings by Benjamin Britten, composed in 1933–35 for the pupils of Clive House School in Wales where his brother, Robert, was headmaster. Film buffs will recognize two of the songs, "Cuckoo" and "Old Abram Brown", from their use in Wes Anderson's 2012 film, Moonrise Kingdom, with "A New Year Carol" included in the soundtrack of last year's Challengers.
In a nice alignment of the stars, Foley is excited to share a recording of Friday Afternoons not only on Friday afternoon, but also what happens to be the birthday of the English poet, short story writer and novelist, Walter de la Mare, whose compilation of children's rhymes, Come Hither, was Britten's source of the texts for the work.
You can hear Foley Schuler's musical selections—and stories behind the music—every weekday afternoon from 1 until 5 on Blue Lake Public Radio.
