Born in Brooklyn in 1929, Beverly Sills became a beloved cultural icon. Her career took her from singing operetta as a teenager to TV stardom. When she retired from the stage, she took on managerial roles at the New York City Opera, Lincoln Center and The Metropolitan Opera.
Saturday's matinee broadcast is from April 19, 1975. Beverly Sills stars as Pamira in a Met production of "The Siege of Corinth" - her first rol at the Met. Thomas Schippers leads a cast that also includes Shirley Verrett (Neocle), Harry Theyard (Cleomene), and Justíno Díaz (Maometto).
