Pianist Herbie Hancock turns 85 on April 12, 2025
Pianist Herbie Hancock turns 85 on April 12, 2025

Celebrate Herbie Hancock's 85th birthday with Blue Lake Public Radio Friday night.

Herbie Hancock is beyond category. Equal parts keyboardist, pianist, bandleader, composer, producer, author, teacher, philanthropist and spokesperson for all of jazz, Hancock is revered today as seen in quick sales of his 2025 European and American concert tours. Born April 12, 1940 in Chicago, the maestro celebrates his 85th birthday this weekend, and Jazz From Blue Lake is getting a jump on the festivities this Friday night starting at 10 p.m. edt. If you can't make the hang to 3 a.m. then please join us this weekend via the jazz stream as all five hours will repeat there.

Blue Lake Public Radio’s “Jazz Director” Lazaro Vega started at Blue Lake in March of 1983, 8 months after Bob Hope spoke the first station I.D. ever heard on the air from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. In 2018, Lazaro was nominated for the The Bobby Jackson Award by JazzWeek.com as Programmer of the Year. This honor is voted on by people who promote jazz record airplay and keep Blue Lake in new releases. For more about Lazaro, see his recent interview with Local Spins.
