Featuring a previously unissued performance by the trumpeter from 1967.

A belated birthday tribute to the late great jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on Jazz From Blue Lake tonight features a previously unissued recording of his 1967 working band at The Blue Morocco in the Bronx. With pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Herbie Lewis and drummer Freddie Waits, Hubbard is joined in the front-line by Detroit tenor saxophonist Bennie Maupin in a program of challenging Hubbard originals including "Crisis" and "Breaking Point," extended interpretations of standards "Bye, Bye Blackbird" and "Summertime," as well as his lovely waltz "Up Jumped Spring." Join us on 88.9 FM in Grand Rapids, 90.3 FM across west Michigan, here on line and tomorrow on our jazz stream.

Blue Lake Public Radio’s “Jazz Director” Lazaro Vega started at Blue Lake in March of 1983, 8 months after Bob Hope spoke the first station I.D. ever heard on the air from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. In 2018, Lazaro was nominated for the The Bobby Jackson Award by JazzWeek.com as Programmer of the Year. This honor is voted on by people who promote jazz record airplay and keep Blue Lake in new releases. For more about Lazaro, see his recent interview with Local Spins.
